หลักการใช้

การพิจารณาว่าคำไหนเป็นคำชนิดใด เราดูที่การทำหน้าที่ของมันในประโยค คำๆเดียวอาจทำหน้าที่อย่างหนึ่งในประโยคหนึ่ง แต่อาจทำหน้าที่อย่างอื่นในประโยคอื่นดังในตารางต่อไปนี้

but	conjunction	John came but Mary didn't come. จอห์นมาแต่แมรี่ไม่ได้มา

well	adjective	Are you well? คุณสบายดีหรือ?
	adverb	She speaks well. เธอพูดได้ดี
	interjection	Well ! That expensive. แหม! แพงจัง
afternoon	noun	We ate in the afternoon. เรารับประทานในตอนบ่าย
	noun ทำหน้าที่เหมือน adjective	We had afternoon tea.เราดื่มชามื้อบ่าย
